Colorectal Dis 2026; 28: e70412.
Twenty-three RCTs comprising 1851 adults were included, and demonstrated that purse-string closure was associated with lower incidence of surgical site infections when compared to linear closure (risk ratio 0.18, 95 per cent credible interval 0.07 to 0.37). Wound healing was slower after purse-string closure and hospital stay was comparable between groups.
Comment: Purse-string closure: fewer infections but slower healing.
