Some 175 patients were included, and efferent bowel stimulation was not associated with a decreased incidence in postoperative ileus (7.6 versus 16.4 per cent, P=0.088). No significant differences in median hospital stay or bowel dysfunction was observed between the two groups.
Comment: Technique with a plausible mechanism of action; needs a larger study to establish true efficacy.
